Join Corvallis Literacy Partners - Support Middle School Readers
The middle school grades are pivotal in the development of literacy skills. Research shows reading scores often drop dramatically in the middle school years. It is during this time that students shift their focus from learning to read to using reading to learn. Through Literacy Partners, mentors meet weekly with a middle school student to share their love of reading and focus on improving reading skills.
Volunteer mentors from companies including AVI Biopharma, Central Willamette Community Credit Union, Citizens Bank, Edge Design, Hewlett Packard, OSU, OSU Federal Credit Union, and Samaritan Health Services work with students at Cheldelin and Linus Pauling Middle Schools. After participating in training sessions, mentors meet for one hour per week with students to do simple reading activities designed by teachers.
More mentors are needed. To get involve contact Carrie O’Bryan, district literacy coordinator, 541-757-5779, carrie.obryan@corvallis.k12.or.us.
The program is a partnership of the Corvallis School District, and the Corvallis-Benton Chamber Coalition, Corvallis Public Schools Foundation and E3: Employers for Education Excellence.
The Corvallis Literacy Partners are also looking for a couple of business people who might be interested in serving on our planning team, which meets about three times a year along with school district staff.
